In 1886, Melanio Oliva first planted tobacco in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba. Today, Gilberto and his family are the second largest growers of Cuban seed tobacco in Nicaragua. In 2016, the Oliva brand was acquired by European cigar manufacturer J.Cortes, but still allows the original head, Jose Oliva, to oversee the product development and marketing of the brand.
